The much anticipated Game of Thrones HBO premiere finally arrived April 17th, 2011. It has been a long wait for our household. We are all fans of the medieval fantasy book series by George R. R. Martin. We heard about the Game of Thrones HBO series what seems like ages ago and have been excited ever since.
First thoughts? It was a bit slow, especially the opening scene with the White Walkers and the Night's Watch. (For A Song of Ice and Fire book fans, the Others are called White Walkers in the HBO series.) Beautiful imagery, but kind of long and drawn out.
However, showing this scene right at the beginning was smart, for it shows first thing that this is definitely a fantasy story, but set in medieval times. Otherwise, it would have just seemed like the same old kings and queens tale.
I really loved the opening sequence. It showed the details of the locations of the story via a map that had a cool steampunk feel to it. I will post a video of the Game of Thrones opening later.
The show design sets are amazing. I enjoy the castle scenes especially. And as mentioned above, although slow, the opening scenes in the snow along the Wall are just beautiful. See part of the opening scene in the HBO Game of Thrones trailer in the next post.
So far, the HBO series seems to follow along with the Game of Thrones book, with the exception of renaming the Others.
I believe that the opening episode was probably a bit confusing to those who haven't read the books. And maybe a bit boring. I caught myself moving along with the show perfectly, but I also knew a bit more backstory details, having read the books. If you had that problem, keep watching. It will all start making sense! And read the books- they are awesome!
Game of Thrones comes on every Sunday night at 9 PM EST. Don't miss it!
